The whole caboodle...(and some floss hopping)

Recently I bought a whole set of Anchor embroidery floss (150 skeins I think) on Ebay. I normally buy DMC floss but it was a bargain and true to my Dutch nature -we Dutch love bargains- I couldn't resist such a huge lot of floss! Anyway the whole lot arrived around Christmas and I had not looked at it until this afternoon.

To me it seems like the Anchor colours are generally brighter if you look at the whole range yet less shiny than the DMC flosses. Or is it just me? I just pulled these 4 skeins, admittingly not the best examples of the brightness of the lot, out of the huge heap of floss. I'm trying to decide on a colour for my little 'N is for Narwhal' embroidery. I'm also very curious about the Cosmo/Lecien embroidery flosses but I'm pretty sure I will not find a bargain on Ebay for those... What floss brand do you use? Are you a floss hopper or faithful to one brand?

  1. I've only tried DMC, but I don't think I would mind switching brand if there were a good bargain :-)

  2. Ohhh, lovely colors. I tend to use DMC because it's the most readily available around me, but I'm not even a little bit picky about it.

  3. I am still a total newbie at all this, but Anchor seems to be easiest to buy in the UK and I just bought lots on e-bay too - my total passion is for the variegated ones (especially one in gorgeous ice cream colours)! I know that's possibly a bit sad for experienced embroiderers, but I love how sweet it looks!

  4. I'm definitely a floss hopper. I love experimenting so I'm always buying different kinds. Although, I have to admit I love the shininess that DMC has.

  5. Glad I'm not the only non picky floss hopper here! :) Kate, if variegated floss is for newbies than I'm a total newbie too! Check out this floss http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=37483204
hand dyed variegated floss called fairyland! Yum! (and why do I use so many exclamation marks! I don't know!)

  7. I've only ever used DMC, mostly because I'm a creature of habit and automatically pick up that brand. I have no idea if any other brands are even available where I shop (talk about tunnel vision!).

  8. Im like a couple of others just buy whats there locally so thats either DMC or Anchor but I did an awful lot of stitching in 2009 (well for me!!)and I did get a bit cheesed off with the DMC twisting all the time...I have heard good things about the Cosmo threads but I cant afford to replace all at once so will do it gradually...Have you seen the threads from www.colourstreams.com I got a couple as a Xmas present havent used them yet but they look & feel gorgeous

  10. I'll use anything I can get through the eye of a needle. I love contrast and texture, so the more subtle variations in shine and tone I can get, the better.

  11. I use Anchor because it's available in stores here in Frankfurt:) I like it, although it has some weak points (no great variety in yellow tones).
For now their color range is sufficient for my work :)

  12. I love this Narwhal so much! We have an alphabet in our daughter's room and I'm not at all happy with the N. Perhaps you'll have a pattern for these....

  13. I have a couple of letters in this style but not yet the letters of your daughter (I read her -lovely- name in your profile). Penguin and Fish has an animal alphabet but the animals are not shaped in letters I think...
